About us

Big Life is in the business of changing lives. We fight inequality by working with people and places to create opportunities and inspire change. Whatever service we deliver, we do things the Big Life Way – helping people recognise their strengths and remove barriers so they can change their lives for the better.

We work in partnership with communities, decision-makers and local services to widen opportunities, build resilience and grow local assets.

About NHS East Cheshire Talking Therapies

We offer free NHS therapy for people experiencing common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. Our support includes one-to-one therapy (face-to-face, online or by phone), groups and courses, eTherapy and employment support. We are based in Macclesfield but support people registered with any East Cheshire GP.

What you’ll be doing

As a volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to get involved in a range of meaningful activities that support our work and local people. You can contribute in ways that suit your skills and interests, including:

  • Supporting our Skills for Wellbeing courses by attending and greeting participants
  • Helping to deliver stress taster sessions alongside a clinician
  • Promoting Talking Therapies at community events
  • Reviewing and giving feedback on our service communications
  • Participating in recruitment panels for new staff
  • Encouraging client engagement and service user involvement
  • Supporting service promotion events and activities.

What we need from you

  • A basic understanding of mental health and wellbeing is helpful
  • An interest in supporting people with their mental health
  • Friendly, welcoming and approachable
  • Good local knowledge of East Cheshire is a bonus – but not essential
  • Willingness to attend a Big Life volunteer induction and supervision sessions.

What we will offer you in return

  • Flexible volunteer hours – give as much or as little time as you can
  • All reasonable travel expenses paid (public transport, mileage, parking)
  • A full induction and relevant training for your role
  • Regular support and supervision from your volunteer lead
  • The chance to make a difference and be part of a values-driven organisation.

What next?

If you’re interested in joining us as a volunteer, we’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re looking to gain experience, support your local community, or use your lived experience to help others, we’ll work with you to find a role that’s right for you.

Please note: All volunteer roles require a DBS check and references. Having a criminal record won’t automatically exclude you – we’ll just meet with you to talk about your circumstances and the role.
