Duration: 1 session lasting 4 hours (9am – 1pm or 9:30am – 1:30pm)

The course is designed for anyone working with people whose lives are affected by drug or alcohol misuse and will help you:
- develop the knowledge and confidence to engage in constructive dialogue with such clients to help them identify their problems, needs and wishes;
- signpost and refer them to appropriate specialist services.
The course presents addiction as a multidimensional problem involving psychological, physical and social factors, and will provide you with knowledge about the effects and risks of common drugs, help you identify signs and symptoms of substance misuse and introduce you to different treatment options.
What does the course cover?
- What is a drug?
- Types of use – experimental, recreational, problematic and dependent
- What is addiction? A biopsychosocial approach
- Assessment – how do you know if there’s a problem?
- Types of treatment – brief interventions, peer support groups, structured treatment programmes, detox and rehab
- Drug categories, and effects and risks of common drugs
- Substance misuse and mental health – including what’s meant by terms like “dual diagnosis” and “co-occurring conditions”, and looking at why substance misuse can be a barrier to accessing psychological therapies\
