The Kath Locke community celebrates Black History Month

To mark the end of Black History Month, people from across Moss Side and Hulme came together for an evening celebrating heritage, culture and Black excellence at the Kath Locke Centre.

More than 60 local people came to the event, held in the newly renovated centre, home to the Kath Locke Heritage exhibition, which tells the story of how activism, campaigning and community has shaped the local area.

Guests were treated to a demonstration of steel pan music from Callum Ramsay, a local teacher and band leader of the traditional Caribbean instrument. Local poets read verses dedicated to Black activism and justice, and the night finished with a pub-style quiz celebrating Black history and culture, with a few snippets of local trivia thrown in.

The evening was catered by Amrstore, the new café at the Kath Locke, serving up amazing Caribbean-influenced food. Amrstore is now open through the week at the centre, so if you haven’t dropped in yet for lunch or a coffee, make sure you do!

The Black History Month celebration is just the start of regular events set to be held at the centre, including a community steelband, led by Callum – check out all the details below.
