Play Full: Longsight Community Primary team up with Save the Children UK

Pupils at Longsight Community Primary have taken part in an exciting creative project, all about celebrating the importance of play and its impact in supporting children’s imagination, self-expression, and wellbeing.

Longsight’s Year 5 children have worked closely with the team at Save the Children UK on a brand-new project titled, ‘Play Full’. Together, they spent several months exploring how play can make life better for children at home, in-school, and in their communities. Longsight pupils focused their work on ‘play where you live’, sharing thoughts, creating artwork and taking part in activities exploring how space and support for play in the home allows for a happier, healthier life.

As a Rights Respecting School, Longsight students were extremely passionate about highlighting play as a key right for every child, falling under Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. They shared what play means to them and how it shapes their lives as a way to be imaginative, express feelings, share memories and laughter, and feel closer to parents and families. They also discussed barriers that prevent a Play Full home and came up with constructive solutions, such as more safe outdoor spaces, materials to encourage creativity, and having adults joining in with play.

The project culminated in a community parade from the school to Crowcroft Park on a warm Saturday afternoon in the summer. By marking this special moment, Longsight Primary and Save the Children highlighted the importance of building a Play Full community and a Play Full world, where children’s rights are celebrated and protected.

All the work was compiled into a practical guide to using play as a tool for creativity, connection and change, featuring some of the Longsight students who helped to make it.
