Grimsby Food Kitchen
The soup kitchen was born from a desire of some kind hearted local people wishing to help those less fortunate than themselves. In 2006 on a street corner in Grimsby started a journey that no one was expecting, trading out the boot of a car home cooked food was be given to those who lived on the streets in desperate need of support.
In 2007 a change lead to the soup kitchen moving in to the town centre and making the leap from soup to serving hot traditional food resulting in an increase of clients. Local press and donations from companies and residents have lifted this service's profile.
In September 2008 this service made a huge leap by working closely with Open Door and moving from its cold street corner and car parks into the 2009 national award winning Open Door building revamping how it operates and having a face lift becoming "Grimsby Food Kitchen".
In the past several months numbers have continued to increase. An average of 50+ homeless and hard to reach vulnerable clients access the building every Sunday and bank holidays between the hours of 3-5.
Kath, Ken and Linda have worked hard in promoting the food kitchen and gaining numerous contacts and donation sources.
Christmas 2009 saw their first indoor Christmas celebration. Approximately 60-100 walked through the doors between 1 and 5pm Christmas Eve. Food and drinks were plentiful and a good time was had by services users and staff.
A big thank you again goes to staff and volunteers as without their time and support, events like these would not go ahead.
A special thank you goes to Chung at Oriental Express in Cleethorpes and Spice of Life who provided us with the buffet for the Christmas Eve celebrations.
Kath, Ken and Linda would also like to mention the following people who have been kind enough to donate supplies gifts and money.
Sarah Spence & Rebecca Kirwin - Millennium Chemicals
Gill & Gary Payne – Partnership
Cleethorpes & Humberston Sea Lions
John Ellis & Victory Church
Ladybirds
Jessica White - Artie whites foundations
Glen Santos – Manager Asda Store, Grimsby
Iceland Frozen foods
Pippin’s Fruit and Veg – Five Ways, Grimsby
We apologise if we have missed any one off but there are so many kind hearted people, and without your help none of this could go ahead.
