Case Study

Summergrove in Liverpool is a project set up to help families recovering from drug addiction.

Summergrove is a safe place for parents, who have been affected by drugs, to live with their families and be supported in rebuilding their lives. Research has shown that keeping families together massively aids the rehabilitation process.

For the first time in the Merseyside area, Summergrove brings together adult and child support services to provide a seamless service to its residents. Often it has been the lack of joined-up working in services dealing with social exclusion that has affected the quality of support provided to clients.

Summergrove focuses on the family, which comes under great stress when people suffer from addiction, not just the individual in recovery. The welfare of children is central to its work it provides support and counselling independent of their parents, to help them recover from their experience of addiction.

Hidden Harm: Responding to the needs of children of problem drug users, June 2003, highlighted that there are between 250,000 and 350,000 children of problem drug users in the UK.

Services available to parents include counselling sessions, training and employment opportunities, complementary therapies, parenting skills and family support.

By working with whole families, and safeguarding the future of children and young people, Summergrove will break the cycle of addiction.

Big Life Services manage the day to day running and support services delivered to families living in Summergrove. It is owned by Maritime Housing and Liverpool City Council helped develop the centre.
