Taking control…. changing your life

The Big Life group is about providing opportunity. Self Help Services give people the opportunity to take control of their own lives and manage their own problems.

Self Help Services is a network of user-led self-help groups which provide support and advice about an issue common to all group members. In a nutshell, a self-help group is about a community of people tying to help one another with some of life's hard problems.

Joining a self-help group allows you to take on some responsibility for coping with your own problems or experiences.

All group members will have shared similar experiences, conditions or situations. Attending a group is a good way to find out how others have coped; what worked for them, as well as enabling you to develop relationships with others who really do understand. Self-help groups offer mutual support and respect for their members relieving the isolation that many people feel.

Hand-outs of information relevant to the group's needs, are available at most sessions and some groups even lend members books and tapes. Every member in a self-help group is responsible for the way the group operates. Each self-help group is open to members’ suggestions to bring about change.

Some groups will have facilitators. Facilitators are not experts, but group members who have experienced the same situation a particular group deals with, with additional responsibilities. They simply co-ordinate the activities of a group including raising awareness of the group, ensuring room availability, or organising refreshments.
