An action plan for people to change their own lives

The Big Life Plan is an individually tailored package of support created for each person selling The Big Issue in the North magazine. The plan provides support and guidance to help people make progress in all areas of their life and to move away from homelessness for good.

Each vendor taking part in the plan has their own tailored action plan, agreed by both the organisation and the vendor, which details the problems vendors face and the barriers preventing them from moving on from selling the magazine. The plan outlines the problems and the practical steps they need to take to overcome them, the targets and milestones to achieve and the timescales for people to work to. It is compulsory for vendors of The Big Issue in the North to take part in. The Big Life Plan. We believe everyone has the capacity to rebuild their lives, but, motivation to change is triggered by different things. That’s why we’ve ensured that The Big Life Plan is as individual as possible, based on the needs and aspirations of each particular vendor.

The plan works flexibly to help vendors make progress, at their own pace, in the areas they want to and in the areas we know will help them to move on. The Big Life Plan provides:

• Education, Training and Employment support
• Financial Advice
• Health services and advice
• Drugs and Alcohol Support
• Projects and Personal Development Opportunities
• Accommodation/housing support

Vendors who buy their magazines from one of the sub-offices (which are run by different organisations, selling the magazine on our behalf) are not currently enrolled on the Big Life plan, but may have access to a different range of services provided locally.
