Badging Up

Only homeless, or vulnerably housed, people over the age of 16 are eligible to sell The Big Issue in the North magazine. Vendors must also prove their housing status by providing us with a letter from a hostel, council, GP or other homeless agency.

All new vendors undergo a ‘Badging Up’ process before they can receive their badge and start to sell the magazine. Each badge has the vendor’s photograph, the name of the pitch where they sell and a badge number. This number should correspond with the number on the front cover of the magazine they are selling.

Vendors receive 15 credit copies of the magazine to help them get started. After this all vendors buy The Big Issue in the North for 50 pence and sell it to the public for £1.20, keeping the 70 pence profit they make.

Vendors are not employed by The Big Issue in the North. How much they earn varies, depending on how hard they work and the location of their pitch. Vendors sign a statement declaring their self-employed status and agreeing to inform The Benefits Agency of their earnings from the magazine.
