Pitches

Vendors sell on specified pitches in the towns and cities where the magazine operates. This covers the North of England, from Stoke-on-Trent to the Scottish borders and coast to coast (excluding Newcastle). It has offices in Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool, Hull and Sheffield. Other Big Issue companies operate in Scotland, Wales and the South.

Pitches are based in the city centre and in out of town areas. At any one time there are around 300 pitches where vendors can sell the magazine. Vendors usually start selling the magazine in the city centre – which means we can provide them with extra support if needed, they can access services and buy magazines more frequently.

Selling outside the major city centres demands certain skills from vendors, including managing their budget and knowing how many magazines to buy so they don’t have to travel back to the office too often.

Pitch systems in all areas are regularly reviewed with the local police and councils. We also work with city centre management teams and businesses to manage the pitches, vendor behaviour and contribute to keeping our towns and cities safe and pleasant for everyone.

In Liverpool recently all pitches were marked with pavement stencils.

Each day staff from our offices patrol the streets to ensure that vendors are having no problems while they are selling The Big Issue in the North. They also check that are no bogus vendors trying to sell or beg with the magazine.
